Rodents directly transmitted number of pathogens that can cause human disease diseases in the US. These include: hantavirus, leptospirosis, rat bite, fever, and salmonellosis. 
In Arizona, the deer mouse is a primary host for hantaviruses.
There has been an increase of rodent borne diseases with a disruption of our ecosystem.
